Millom’s community sports facility is now into its 24th year, yet the provision now is stronger than every. Since taking the reigns the new management team and the fantastic group of instructors, coaches and staff have transformed the centre. With a dramatic re-development on the horizon the centre offers a diverse range of activity that really dos suit everyone. Classes such as Zumba, spinning and baseball have recently been added to the programme. Millom and its surrounding villages rely heavily on the "sports hall" and this year they continue to serve that need with resounding success. In the last year participation rates have rocketed, mainly thanks to the improved classes, and tireless work of its staff and committee but also due to the new communication strategies the centre utilises. Social media, flyers, chalkboards, news articles, websites and community events are used to great effect making sure everyone knows what’s going on.

The Copeland Sport Awards were organised by Copeland Borough Council and saw the pride of the borough compete to take home a number of accolades.

Sports stars from South Copeland won a range of awards – Marion Giles, a director at Millom Recreation Centre, was presented with the Lifetime Service award, Millom Rugby Union Club was named Club of the Year and Millom School pupil Casey Blanchard was recognised as Young Leader of the Year for her work in the Copeland netball league.

Mrs Giles was recognised by the High Sheriff of Cumbria, James Carr, earlier this year for her work with Millom Recreation Centre.

The recreation centre in Lancashire Road was built in 1988 and Mrs Giles has been involved since the start, becoming a director in 1992.

She said: “It is always very humbling to receive such an award and often the work that a lot of people do voluntarily does go unnoticed.

“The Copeland Sports Awards is a great way of recognising the work that is done through sport throughout the county and especially in Millom, which has always been a sport-orientated town.”

Millom RUFC was formed in 1873 and this year its Wilson Park Clubhouse was named CAMRA’s Cumbrian club of the year.
